Dreamers can breathe easy. The government is contorting itself to keep them in the country. A federal judge ruled Tuesday that DACA will stay in place.
DACA was the first thing that conservatives capitulated on during their immigration talks with Democrats. The president is intent on beefing up our border security deporting illegal immigrants with criminal records.
Democrats support amnesty for almost all illegals, but they’re particularly motivated to protect the Dreamers, young migrants who were brought to the U.S. while underage.
The ingredients for an immigration bill are there, but Congress hasn’t been able to ink out an agreement.
While the debate plays out in Washington, courts across the country are weighing in. Tuesday’s ruling wasn’t the first time that federal judge decided in DACA’s favor. Last month a San Francisco judge ruled that the Obama-era policy needed to remain in place while various lawsuits were being decided.
“We’re asking Congress to support our immigration policy that keeps terrorists, drug dealers, criminals and gang members out of our country. We want them out. We don’t want them in and right now we’re working on DACA, we’re working on immigration bills and we’re making them tough,” Trump said during a meeting at the White House.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opened the discussion by introducing an amendment aimed squarely at “sanctuary cities.”
“To begin the debate as the Republican leader suggests would be getting off on the wrong foot… Very partisan,” the Senate’s top-ranking Democrat, Chuck Schumer, said.
“I’m not trying to dictate to them what they offer. They shouldn’t be trying to dictate to us what we offer. We ought to just get started,” McConnell shot back.
Whatever Congress decides regarding immigration, the Dreamers don’t have too much to worry about. Both sides admit they’re willing to protect them.
