Without a doubt, one of the biggest changes between the Obama and Trump presidencies has been the latter’s foreign policy stance towards Middle East issues.
Under Obama, the United States took a very weak posture that was more concerned with not screwing up and kowtowing to Muslims than it was about getting things done. Since Trump took office, he’s unleashed his generals in Syria, and as a result, ISIS has been decimated. With regards to Israel and its litany of critics, Trump has taken a bold stance in favor of our long-time ally, much to the chagrin of the UN and our other “allies.”
As reported at the New York Post, the president’s competent and straightforward policies have earned him the praise of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that the real estate background of some members of the Trump administration may bring the creativity needed to forge Middle East peace.
“The thing that people don’t realize is that these people have made their mark in the markets in real estate,” Netanyahu told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria in an interview that aired on Sunday.
Trump’s life has been spent making lucrative real estate deals in one of the most competitive markets in the world. He’s written numerous books about how to negotiate and get the best deals as well, which is a skill he’s been using to great effect during his presidency.
“Now, this is not only a real estate deal,” Netanyahu acknowledged. “It’s fundamentally not a real estate deal, but a problem of recognizing Israel’s existence, the problem of not recognizing a Jewish state in any boundary. But it also has its real estate elements, and they’re, I have to say, very creative, you know. ”
Netanyahu praised the Trump administration for finally taking action on the age-old promise of moving America’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the ancient capitol of Jerusalem, despite the deluge of pushback that’s come in the wake of the decision.
“President Trump made history by recognizing history, recognizing these indelible facts of the past and the present,” Netanyahu said. “And under any peace agreement, you know that the capital of Israel will continue to be Jerusalem, and the seat of our government will continue to be in Jerusalem.”
“He did a great service for peace because peace can only be based on truth, ” he added.
Israel is the one true democracy in the Middle East and a partner that’s always been there for the US, not to mention its strategic importance. It’s only sensible that the US would choose its relationship with the Israelis over the feelings of the do-nothing UN and our European allies. And like Netanyahu said, hopefully, Trump’s presidency will see positive movement towards a lasting peace deal.
