The Left has fallen in love with Oprah following her Golden Globes’ victory speech. After seeing a celebrity like Trump defeat the unbeatable “Her turn” Hillary Clinton, leftists have been throwing out the possibility of putting forward their own celebrity candidate in 2020.
Several names have bee thrown out, but Oprah’s name, in particular, has stood out from the rest. She’s self-made, a woman, black, and immensely powerful, and on Sunday, she added fuel to the fire with what could be taken as a declaration of presidential intent on her part. But while liberals are still watching the speech on repeat, President Trump isn’t concerned about his potential opponent at all.
As reported at the New York Post, when asked about the week’s most talked about issue on Tuesday, President Trump said he’d “beat” Oprah Winfrey if she decided to run for president.
“Yeah, I’d beat Oprah. Oprah would be a lot of fun,” Trump said during a bipartisan meeting on immigration reform in the White House. “I know her very well. I did one of her last shows … I like Oprah.” But he said he doesn’t “think she’s going to run.”
Trump appears to hold Oprah in pretty high regard. Back in 1999, when talking with Larry King, he said that if he ran for president, he’d seriously consider making her his vice president.
Asked by King on his CNN show if he had a running mate in mind, Trump replied: “Well, I really haven’t gotten quite there yet. Oprah, I love Oprah. Oprah would always be my first choice. Oprah, your competitor, right? She’s really a great woman, though, she is a terrific woman. She’s somebody that’s very special. I think, if she’d do it, she’d be fantastic. She’s popular, she’s brilliant, she’s a wonderful woman.”
While Oprah hasn’t said much concerning a potential run, many of those close to her are saying that she’s at least considering it, especially after witnessing Trump’s success.
Gayle King, Oprah’s long-time friend, said Tuesday that she thinks Winfrey is “intrigued” by the idea of a presidential run.
“I do think she’s intrigued by the idea. I do think that. I also know after years of watching the Oprah show, you always have a right to change your mind,” said King, who’s an anchor on “CBS This Morning.” She added a caveat, however, saying, “I don’t think at this point she is actually considering it.”
Needless to say, a Trump/Oprah showdown would be incredible for media ratings. It’s difficult to gauge what kind of support she’d draw, but it certainly wouldn’t be insignificant. We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of moves she makes this year, as other Democratic hopefuls are already gearing up for 2020.
