One of the most embarrassing electoral defeats for the GOP in recent years just refuses to go away, as the candidate can’t bring himself to concede. Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore was accused of various sexual improprieties that supposedly occurred decades ago, which turned what should have been an easy Republican win into a national media frenzy.
Despite a media war against him and complete abandonment by his party, Moore very nearly pulled off the win. However, his loss is devastating to Trump and Republican efforts, as the majority in the Senate will now shrink from 52 to 51 once Doug Jones assumes office. While the race was close, it wasn’t close enough to warrant a recount, but that hasn’t stopped Moore from trying to stop the certification of Jones’ win.
As reported at the Daily Mail, Moore has filed a lawsuit to prevent Alabama from certifying Democrat Doug Jones as the winner. Despite multiple calls from Trump and the GOP to just give up his desperate attempts to invalidate the election, Moore refused to back down.
The result was about to be set in stone Thursday via a meeting of the state canvassing board, but about 14 hours before Jones’ win could be made official, a court filing emerged from Moore’s team.
Moore’s attorney wrote in the complaint that he believed there were irregularities during the election and said there should be a fraud investigation and eventually a new election.
“This is not a Republican or Democrat issue as election integrity should matter to everyone,” Moore said in a statement released Wednesday announcing the complaint.
“We call on Secretary of State Merrill to delay certification until there is a thorough investigation of what three independent election experts agree took place: election fraud sufficient to overturn the outcome of the election.”
Even if Moore’s claims of sincerity are true, this last-ditch effort is just adding insult to injury at this point. He’s already been tarred and feathered by the media, labeled a predator and abuser, and rather than bow out gracefully after defeat, he’s clinging on to the false hope that will only make him and the GOP look worse.
“The purpose of the complaint is to preserve evidence of potential election fraud and to postpone the certification of Alabama’s Special Election by Secretary of State John Merrill until a thorough investigation of potential election fraud, that improperly altered the outcome of this election,” the statement said.
While fraud is certainly a possibility, there’s next to no chance it’ll be investigated, especially since the Left will stymie any effort since they happened to snatch away such an important and unlikely seat.
At this point, Moore needs to go away. His continued presence is bad for the party, as are his antics, which make it look like Republicans are sore losers that can’t accept unfavorable election results. It’s very unfortunate he lost, but that’s the way the cookie crumbled.
