Hollywood superstar, Meryl Louise Streep, has received 30 Golden Globe nominations, winning eight—more nominations, and more competitive (non-honorary) wins than any other actor (male or female). In other words, the woman is no stranger to the red carpet.
Designer Karl Lagerfeld was originally enlisted to create Streep’s customized Oscar gown but was later asked to call off work on the dress because “We found somebody who will pay us,” Lagerfeld quoted the messenger.
According to WWD,
Chanel has a policy of not paying celebrities to wear its clothes, apparently even those of the “greatest living” ilk. That’s not to say there’s no expense involved, both in terms of valuable hours clocked by the artisans of the atelier and the bottom line. “After we gift her a dress that’s 100,000 euros [$105,000], we found later we had to pay [for her to wear it]. We give them dresses, we make the dresses, but we don’t pay,” Lagerfeld said.
Lagerfeld himself has been in the center of some controversy lately, since not joining his liberal compatriots boycott of the First Lady. Lagerfeld dressed Mrs. Obama during her tenure as the FLOTUS and continued his relationship with the White House for the Trump administration, stating that “people have to deal with it” when talking about the outcome of the election.
Streep took it upon herself to harshly criticize President Trump last month at the Golden Globes for something that he didn’t actually do, crying and saying that “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
I just hope the folks over at Chanel feel that way about the time spent altering a dress to fit a woman who wouldn’t deign wear it unless they contributed to her considerable net worth.
Streep is also quoted to have said “Expensive clothes are a waste of money” and apparently Chanel agrees with her.
