If you’re ever in Washington and you’re looking to talk to a straight shooter, you might want to look up Trey Gowdy. This Republican from South Carolina has a “take no prisoners” attitude when he’s looking for the truth. He will criticize anyone or anything that he believes to be in opposition to truth, justice, and the American way. He’s garnered such a great reputation for seeking out the truth that he was apparently on the short list to replace former FBI director James Comey, though he removed himself from the running.
So, when Trey Gowdy comes out and basically says; “hey guys, there’s more to this story than we can share, but don’t go so hard on Comey” it makes people perk up and pay attention. The actual quote was:
“Trust me when I tell you this, Martha — I know what it was and I have been a critic of James Comey in the past. But he made the only decision he could have made with respect to appropriating that decision away from the Department of Justice and making the decision himself.”

This former prosecutor isn’t somebody who makes a habit of passing out get out of jail free cards. In fact, his former occupation was to gather as many of those back from criminals as possible. It also bears mentioning that Gowdy is on several committees that make sure he keeps up to date on what is happening in the political criminal world.
Of course, he can’t go sharing every bit of information with us, just because we’re curious, but his throwing his weight behind Comey should tell us a lot about what is happening in the dissection of Comey’s character. And yes, there’s a point at which we will have to put a little trust in our elected officials because it’s their job to have security clearances and work on our behalf.
Nobody is saying that Comey is off the hook yet, they’re just saying that maybe not everything that people want to crucify him for is exactly what meets the eye.
