Accolades keep rolling in for the Roseanne reboot. President Trump called comedian Roseanne Barr personally Wednesday to congratulate her on her success.
The show, which premiered Tuesday, was a massive hit. ABC hasn’t had such comedy gold on its hands in years.
It’s easy to see why Trump was so pleased. The show’s title character is a lovable Trump supporter. Hollywood turned its back on the president when he was elected.
“It was pretty exciting, I’ll tell you that, they said, ‘Hold please for the President of the United States of America’ and that was about the most exciting thing ever and it was very sweet of him to congratulate us,” Barr told ABC’s Good Morning America.
“We talked about a lot of things, he is just happy for me… I have known him for many years and he has done a lot of nice things for me over the years and it was just a friendly conversation about work and television and ratings.”
The show follows the Conners, a working-class family helmed by Roseanne and her TV husband Dan. The first episode of the reboot doesn’t mention Trump or Hillary Clinton by name but it becomes obvious that Roseanne voted for Trump and her sister went left.
“Most of all Lord, thank you for making America great again!” Roseanne jokes during the show.
It’s refreshing to see a mainstream TV show embrace real American values. Sometimes it seems like Hollywood is making content for itself. Glaringly liberal shows and movies are common. The fact that a likable TV show character is pro-Trump shouldn’t be such big news.
“I just wanted to have that dialogue about families torn apart by the election and their political differences of opinion and how we handle it. I thought that this was an important thing to say at this time,” Barr said last week.
