You’ve probably heard the saying “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch your back.” Meaning, if you’ll do this convenient thing for me, I’ll do you a favor in return. Mexico seems to think that is the kind of relationship that we have with them since they’re drawing all kinds of lines in the sand about what they will do if we persist in our insensitive wall building efforts.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s foreign relations secretary called U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to build a border wall an “unfriendly, hostile” act, adding Tuesday that it is a “bad idea” that will not accomplish anything.
“If the negotiation on other themes — immigration, the border, trade — isn’t satisfactory to Mexico’s interests, we will have to review our existing cooperation,” [Mexico’s Foreign Secretary Luis] Videgaray said. “This would be especially in the security areas … and that involves the national immigration agency, the federal police and of course, the armed forces.”
Mexico at present cooperates with the United States in fighting drug cartels and other forms of transnational crime.
So, that is super nice of them to cooperate with their neighbors in dealing with something that’s a problem in both our countries. Saying that Mexico “cooperates with the United States in fighting drug cartels” would be kind of like me saying that my neighbor “cooperates with me” by exterminating his house. Um, yes I guess by decreasing the general population of cockroaches we all benefit, but I’m not the only one that gains from that action.
Also, I can’t go any further without dealing with this; who the heck do they think they are to say that we can’t build a wall in our country? We will build whatever we want to build, and we will pay for it however we want to pay for it.
While those inside this country are welcome to debate this problem till they’re blue in the face, the only decisions that Mexico gets to make is whether they want to keep doing business with us. If they really don’t like what we’re doing, I guess they could pick a fight, but with their citizens already wanting to jump ship and join us, I can’t imagine that going to war with the U.S. would be an advantageous thing for them.
So far the back scratching has continued, tentatively, but they should tread carefully (and away from the border) unless they want the claws to come out.
