Former president Jimmy Carter has a lot to say about the Trump administration. And it’s not all good.
Carter raved against John Bolton in a recent interview. He called President’s Trump’s decision to hire him the worst mistake of his career. Bolton is stepping up to replace H.R. McMaster, Trump’s fired national security adviser.
“I think John Bolton has been the worst mistake he’s made,” Carter told CBS. “I have been concerned at some of the things he’s decided.”
Bolton isn’t a fan of Carter’s either. He’s openly criticized the former president for some of his decisions.
Carter believes that Bolton will spark a war, insisting that the former ambassador “has been advocating a war with North Korea for a long time and even an attack on Iran… has been one of the leading figures on orchestrating the decision to invade Iraq.”
Bolton has had a prolific career as a writer. He’s made a few comments that justify Carter’s description of him as an insatiable war hawk but is overall stance is far more nuanced. He’s a pragmatist.
Carter said that Bolton will muck up the pending negotiations with North Korea over its nuclear capabilities. When asked what advice he would give the president about handling the delicate negotiation, Carter replied: “You mean, other than fire John Bolton? That would be my first advice.”
Trump’s White House has been unusually chaotic. Carter’s scathing rant against Bolton was mild compared to the amount of abuse that some of Trump’s picks have faced. Democrats treat Education Secretary Betsy DeVos with open contempt.
“I am concerned as a matter of fact about his deliberate moves to get into the key positions of government just people who agree with him… President Trump’s choice of close advisers, powerful advisers, have gone to unanimity rather than diversity,” Carter said.
