If you’re not someone who screens their your calls, you may want to start. According to reports, there’s a new scam going around, and it’s all about getting you to say one specific word.
The way it works is that when you receive a call, someone either says “can you hear me?” or just “hello” and when you say “yes” your voice is recorded and then put after some sort of fraudulent question.
Here’s a full review of how this scam works.
There are a few things you can do though if you think that you’ve already been targeted.
Via CBS:
What can you do? If you suspect you have already been victimized, check your credit card, phone and cable statements carefully for any unfamiliar charges. Call the billing company — whether your credit card company or your phone provider — and dispute anything that you didn’t authorize on purpose. If they say you have been recorded approving the charge and you have no recollection of that, ask for proof.
Sadly, scams like this have been going around in one form or another for some time, but this one preys on all of our dependence on cell phones. A lot of us don’t even have landlines anymore, and the awareness of that makes us want to be sure that we’re able to connect with those we care about. Knowing that scammers can mirror a target’s area code to confuse and trick them is knowledge that can keep you safe in the future.
