If someone asked you what the 4th of July means to you, you might talk about the events you take part in. Whether you’re spending your time watching a fireworks show, or putting one on yourself, hopefully, you never forget what you’re actually celebrating; Independence.
The independence and freedom that we enjoy today were brought about by free thinkers, in tune with not only what the people wanted but what they needed. The founding fathers didn’t want to box people into requirements to do or learn certain things, they wanted to give people the freedom to do as much or as little as they wanted, and let those with discernment watch the cream rise.
Sadly, not everyone appreciates that freedom and they seem to be trying to do as little as possible. This was made acutely evident when political analyst Mark Dice asked people on the street basic questions about our nation’s founding. The results are sad.
It would be nice to say that this is an isolated incident. Maybe he just picked out the dumb ones and put them all together. If you’re paying attention though, you’ll see the results of this everywhere. Not only are there plenty of other youtube videos from this guy and lots of others, who show the ineptitude of the general population, but you’ve probably experienced it in real life.
They say that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it and if that’s the case unless something changes, our country is headed straight for tyranny and dictatorship. If we can’t even hold onto our history enough to know that we don’t want to go back to taxation without representation and being occupied by another countries military, then maybe we deserve it.
If we can’t wake up from our comfort long enough to realize that comfort is going to be our undoing, this nation, still in its infancy, might never get the chance to grow to adulthood. Because when a nation is ruled by the people, the people are the only thing that can ruin it.
