President Trump reacted firmly and swiftly to the Halloween terrorist attack in New York. Instead of a canned statement issued through a spokesman, Trump addressed Americans in his own words.
“In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!”
A Muslim refugee plowed a truck into a bike path before leaping out of his car and lunging at people with a pellet gun before being shot by police.
The president went into more detail as the night continued.
“I have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already Extreme Vetting Program. Being politically correct is fine, but not for this… We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!”
We can’t live our lives afraid to go outside. We need to figure out a better way to protect crowds of people.
Are you glad Trump reacted immediately? Previous commander in chiefs would have weighed their words and likely refrained from alluding to the attacker’s Islamic faith. Trump, however, doesn’t play the usual political games. He’s his own man.
“We have recently seen attacks like this one throughout the world. DHS and its law enforcement partners remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the American people,” Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke said Tuesday.
Trump also made sure to thank first responders.
“We offer our thanks to the first responders who stopped the suspect and rendered immediate aid to the victims of this cowardly attack… These brave men and women embody the true American spirit of resilience and courage,” Trump said.
