The name of U.S. Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens is just about a household name for most Americans following the media attention his death has garnered. The Navy Seal was killed in a counterterrorism raid in Yemen last month and President Trump took the time to honor him and his wife Carryn Owens for their sacrifice to their country. This took place at his address to the joint session of congress on Tuesday night.
In his speech, President Trump said of Owens:
“Our veterans have delivered for this nation—and now we must deliver for them . . .Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero – battling against terrorism and securing our nation,”
Congress, the media and most of the United States have paused to remember and thank the fallen hero and his family, but one Clinton supporter took it upon himself to demean the tribute. Dan Grilo, who is a self-proclaimed Hillary and Obama supporter, thought he would weigh in on the buzz surrounding the President’s speech.
Grilo said in the tweet:
“Sorry, Owens’ wife, you’re not helping yourself or your husband’s memory by standing there and clapping like an idiot. Trump just used you.”
Grilo’s tweet quickly made the rounds and elicited an uproar of its own from pretty much anyone and everyone with a soul.
Hatred from the other side. I would think this is beyond what a human is capable of saying to someone, but it's not! pic.twitter.com/nNVfFWJmDh

Shortly after the outrage was expressed on a viral level, Grilo apolagized for his “poorly worded tweet,” his account went private and then was deleted entirely. The work identification on Grilo’s LinkedIn page says he works as a principal for the Chicago-based Liberty Advisor Group. But as of Wednesday morning, Grilo’s profile page on the site had been deleted, and the company later confirmed that an employee had sent what they called “an offensive and inappropriate tweet” regarding the Gold Star family. The company also said in a statement that the comments made by Grilo were “inconsistent with the Company’s values.”
“Regardless of whether the comments in the tweet were intended to cause the hurt and anger that they ultimately generated, they were unacceptable to us, and the individual who issued the tweet is no longer affiliated with Liberty,”
Thankfully some in this country still consider there to be a line of decency, that when crossed, one cannot come back from. As sad as it is to see anyone’s life crumbling around their ears, I doubt it could happen to a more deserving person than Dan Grilo.
