Sen. Ted Cruz and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wrangled Tuesday during Zuckerberg’s congressional testimony. Cruz accused Facebook of being a politically biased, left-leaning platform.
“There are a great many Americans who I think are deeply concerned that Facebook and other tech companies are engaged in a pervasive pattern of bias and political censorship,” Cruz said. “There have been numerous instances with Facebook.”
Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook employees tend to cluster on the left but claimed that he wants the site to be as free from bias as possible.
“To a great many Americans that appears to be a pervasive pattern of political bias,” Cruz said. “Do you agree with that assessment?”
Conservative groups are treated differently on the platform. Right-wing stories trend far less often than left-wing ones. Diamond and Silk, two outspoken pro-Trump sisters, were personally targeted. Facebook staff members purposefully tried to bury their popular videos.
“The policy team has come to the conclusion that your content and your brand has been determined unsafe to the community…This decision is final and it is non appealable in any way,” reads an email Facebook sent to the sisters.
Liberal videos are allowed to go viral, conservative videos are squashed. A sizeable portion of the world uses Facebook. People are being spoon-fed fringe liberal lies.
Facebook was shamed into re-allowing Diamond and Silk’s videos to flourish. Fans complained bitterly and loudly after they heard what the social network had done.
“We have communicated directly with Diamond And Silk about this issue. The message they received last week was inaccurate and not reflective of the way we communicate with our community and the people who run Pages on our platform,” Facebook’s spokeswoman Sarah Pollack said
Facebook has been in damage control mode after it was leaked to the public that outside companies were harvesting user data without their knowledge.
