Democrats refuse to fully fund the border wall so President Trump is taking border security into his own hands. He announced today that he plans to line the border with military troops until the wall is erected.
The immigration battle is finally coming to a head. President Trump is trying to force Congress to take more decisive action. A “caravan” of illegal immigrants are openly and boldly marching toward the U.S.
“We are going to be guarding our border with our military. That’s a big step,” Trump said Tuesday. “We cannot have people flowing into our country illegally, disappearing and, by the way, never showing up for court.”
Deploying troops along the border is a controversial idea. But what else can Trump do? The left wields too much influence. Republicans aren’t pressing their advantage in Congress.
“The Mexican border is very unprotected by our laws,” the president said.
“We have horrible, horrible and very unsafe laws in the United States, and we’re going to be able to do something about that, hopefully soon. We are preparing for the military to secure our border between Mexico and the United States. We have a meeting on it in a little while with General Mattis and everybody. And I think that it’s something we have to do.”
Border Patrol agents are understaffed. Migrants are still streaming into the U.S. in huge numbers. Armed soldiers at the border would provide an extra deterrent.
Democrats thought Trump would just give up. He was willing to compromise on DACA so they thought they could push him around on border issues.
Soldiers aren’t the best response. A better idea would be to immediately begin constructing the wall. However, that’s not happening. The massive budget recently passed by Congress only approved a meager amount to be spent on building new parts of the wall.
