Trump To Offer Citizenship to 1.8 Million ‘Dreamers’ In Exchange For The Wall. Good Idea?

June 7, 2026 by Lara Blaine

President Trump enraged immigration-hardlines this week when he expressed his support for limited amnesty. If Congress agrees, 1.8 million Dreamers will become U.S. citizens.

Trump knows that every second that passes without the border wall being erected is a second that American lives are in danger. He’s willing to throw Democrats a bone regarding the Dreamers because he realizes that building a wall is more important than deporting law-abiding migrants who are already living in the country.

The deal is simple. Citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers in exchange for $25 billion to build the wall.

Some Republicans feel that Trump is being too generous.

“There’s a real potential for disaster,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the far-right Center for Immigration Studies. “The president hasn’t sold out his voters yet. But I think it’s important that his supporters are making clear to him that they’re keeping an eye on him.”

Even some liberals are annoyed.

“Let’s call this proposal for what it is: a white supremacist ransom note,” complained United We Dream, a pro-illegal immigration advocacy group. “Our fear, our pain, and our lives must not be used to shackle our parents and ban those seeking refuge; we must not be used to tear apart the moral fabric of this country.”

Liberals can’t help themselves, they keep classifying Trump as a racist because it makes it easier to dismiss him. Obviously granting amnesty to nearly 2 million undocumented migrants has nothing to do with white supremacy.

Look, it’s not possible to please everyone. “Amnesty Don,” as Breitbart dismissively calls the president, has no choice but to compromise. Democracy means that all voices are heard, Trump can’t trample on the Democrats and still expect his agenda to make it through Congress.

Is it a good idea? It almost doesn’t matter, there’s nothing else TO do. “The president’s framework is generous and humane, while also being responsible,” Sen. Tom Cotton said in a measured, reasonable statement.

“It protects those eligible for DACA, who are here through no fault of their own. But it also will prevent us from ending up back here in five years by securing the border and putting an end to extended-family chain migration.”
