A former Trump legal advisor believes that Michael Cohen is going to turn on the president.
Jay Goldberg worked with Trump in the 90’s and the early 2000’s. Last week, he personally warned Trump about Cohen’s likely treachery. The Mueller investigation has latched onto Cohen, Trump’s personal lawyer.
Goldberg thinks that Cohen will betray Trump to save himself.
“You have to be alert,” Goldberg told President Trump. “I don’t care what Michael says.”
It’s a legitimate worry. The FBI raided Cohen’s office and home. Investigators seized all of Cohen’s confidential files. If Cohen is threatened with serious jail time, he may be willing to do anything to save himself.
Mueller’s real target is Trump. Whatever Cohen might be guilty of, he can likely evade jail time if he reveals something about Trump.
Cohen first catapulted into the news after it was revealed that he paid $130,000 to Stormy Daniels. That payment is allegedly one of the reasons why he’s being investigated. Prosecutors are looking into tax fraud.
“That’s what they’ll threaten him with: life imprisonment,” said Alan Dershowitz, a lawyer and Trump supporter.
“They’re going to threaten him with a long prison term and try to turn him into a canary that sings.”
Most of the people associated with Trump seem to believe that Cohen can’t be trusted. The two have been working together for more than a decade.
“I think for two years or four years or five years, Michael Cohen would be a stand-up guy. I think he’d tell them to go piss up a rope. But depending on dollars involved, which can be a big driver, or if they look at him and say it’s not two to four years, it’s 18 to 22, then how loyal is he?” a defense lawyer working for the Trump administration asked Politico.
“Is he two years loyal? Is he 10 years loyal? Is he 15 years loyal?”
