Democrats are going to be disappointed. Special Counsel Robert Mueller allegedly told Donald Trump’s lawyers that the president isn’t a criminal target.
Mueller’s expansive probe isn’t over, however. There’s no evidence that Trump did anything wrong but he’s still being investigated. In fact, Mueller is still begging for an interview.
The prosecutor’s mixed messages are hard to follow.
Some of the president’s legal team are encouraging him to meet with Mueller, confident that the interview won’t lead to criminal charges. Others fear that Mueller’s trying to trap Trump.
“The president’s personal risk is primarily on the impeachment front,” Princeton University political-science Professor Keith Whittington said.
“Even if there are not things that lead to indictment, there may be matters that warrant an impeachment investigation and proceedings… If I were the president, I would be very reluctant to think I’m off the hook.”
The Russia investigation has already bagged a few victims. Multiple former Trump associates are facing charges. The left’s desire to convict Trump on collusion charges is starting to look like a pipe-dream. However, that doesn’t mean that Mueller won’t dredge up ugly financial facts from Trump’s past.
“My sense of it is the president — given that information — ought to have pretty fair warning anything he’s saying in the deposition would be legally consequential. Depending on what he says, it could wind up changing how the special counsel is thinking about him,” Whittington said.
President Trump is fending off multiple investigations and lawsuits. His supporters haven’t wavered an inch. Almost no one who voted for Trump believes the lies being spread by the left.
The Russia investigation, because of its sheer size, is likely going to continue for a while. It’s a lot of wasted time and effort but it’s unlikely to lead to impeachment.
