President Trump will not be attending the late Barbara Bush’s memorial service. His wife Melania will go in his place.
The administration says that the president wants to avoid causing a scene. Everywhere Trump goes becomes a chaotic scene. He wants to respect the Bush family by allowing the memorial to occur in peace.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
“First Lady Melania Trump will attend the memorial service for Barbara Bush this Saturday on behalf of the First Family. To avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush Family and friends attending the service, President Trump will not attend,” the White House said in a statement.
A few liberal outlets tried to draw a connection between Trump’s strained relationship with George Bush and his decision not to go to the funeral.
However, there’s no reason to suspect that the story has anything more than spite behind it. Trump spoke about Bush after her passing and his words showed the deep respect he has for her legacy.
“Melania and I send our prayers to Barbara’s husband of 73 years… I’ll never beat that record,” President Trump said during a Wednesday news conference.
“She was a tireless champion for literacy, she was a fierce advocate for the American family and she was a woman of proud patriotism and profound faith… Our hearts are saddened by her passing but our spirits are lifted by the memories of her goodness and her face. She was a good person.”
Bush passed away on Tuesday. She was 92. The Clintons and the Obamas are expected at the funeral.
“Mrs. Trump intends to pay her respects to Barbara Bush and the entire family at the funeral on Saturday,” Trump’s Communications Director Stephanie Grisham said.
“The event will not be pooled as this is about paying tribute to Mrs. Bush.”
