President Trump might be fighting a losing battle. Americans are torn. We love our country, but we also love football. Trump’s battle with the NFL could easily turn ugly.
Patriots superstar Tom Brady, who supported the president during the election, made a startling announcement Monday. America’s favorite football player is distancing himself from Trump.
“Yeah, I certainly disagree with what he said. I thought it was just divisive,” Brady said, referencing Trump’s Friday night attack on the league.
“Like I said, I just want to support my teammates. I am never one to say, ‘Oh, that is wrong. That is right.’ I do believe in what I believe in. I believe in bringing people together and respect and love and trust.”
Trump’s words weren’t polite, but it’s hard to say that he’s wrong. NFL players who disrespect the national anthem are disrespecting the country. There’s something ludicrous about their protest. They’re a bunch of genetically blessed millionaires who are behaving like brats.
“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out. He’s fired. He’s fired’,” Trump said.
Trump has reason on his side, but it might not be enough. America loves the NFL. Millions of men and women look up to Brady as a hero.
“I think everyone has the right to do whatever they want to do. If you don’t agree, that is fine,” Brady said.
“You can voice your disagreement, I think that is great. It’s part of our democracy. As long as it is done in a peaceful, respectful way, that is what our country has been all about.”
Don’t expect NFL owners to punish their players for protesting. The league is too valuable. Some of the players taking a knee are worth tens of millions.
