Who needs Matt Lauer? NBC is thriving without him; the Today Show is destroying its competition. For three straight weeks, the show has raked in more viewers than chief rival Good Morning America.
Lauer was kicked off of the network after foul allegations came to light. He was the worst sort of womanizer, smarmy and overly assured of his appeal.
The network probably feared that the Today Show would suffer after Lauer’s abrupt dismissal, but the exact opposite occurred. Viewers are tuning in to watch the fallout, or perhaps the show has new life now that the creep is gone.
“For the week of December 11-December 15, Today recorded 4.568million total viewers to ABC’s 4.509. As usual, CBS lagged behind both with 3.695million viewers,” reports the Daily Mail.
“In the 25-54 category, they got 1.688million while GMA got 1.439million and CBS 1.004million.”
Savannah Guthrie, Lauer’s former co-host, has been managing the show without him just fine. In fact, she’s doing well that it’s possible NBC will choose not to hire a replacement. Hoda Kotb has been filling in for the past few weeks.
“Just a week before Lauer’s firing, CBS This Morning experienced a similar scandal when co-host Charlie Rose was fired for his own sexual harassment scandal,” continues the Mail.
“However, that show did not experience a bump in viewership.”
Lauer’s fall, it seems, resonated more strongly than Rose’s. People are curious. Before the allegations against him became public, he was on top of the world. Now he’s an unemployed laughingstock.
