President Donald Trump is visiting Puerto Rico in order to tour hurricane damage… finally. He was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump and her hurricane heels; sorry, hurricane Timberlands.
President Trump’s agenda in Puerto Rico also extended to televised meeting with first responders from a number of federal agencies. He also met with the people of Puerto Rico, their local officials, and members of the military.
However, none of Trump’s official events mentioned San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz. This is same mayor that found herself on the receiving end of a Trump Twitter Crusade this past weekend.
The crusade revolved around Trump’s lack of initial response to cries for help from Puerto Rico. Mayor Cruz erupted at a homeland official last week after they reportedly called the destruction in Puerto Rico a “good news story.”
“If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency,” was the Mayor’s response.
Debate Over Quality of Response
President Trump, on the other hand, had a different view of the situation: “We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico… outside fake news or politically motivated ingrates… people are now starting to recognize the amazing work that has been done by FEMA and our great military.”
News outlets are reporting that it was President Trump who chose to snub Mayor Cruz. Whether this was the case has yet to be confirmed.
Either way, there was no great meeting of the minds, and no one knows why.
