Roy Moore’s campaign is fraying at the edges. His communications director, John Rogers, quit without a word Wednesday.
Can you blame him? It’s surprising that anyone is still working for Moore. A lot of politicians are grappling with sexual assault scandals, but the accusations against Moore are particularly disturbing.
Retired Alabama cop Faye Gary told reporters that Moore was known to be such a sicko she was ordered to keep an eye on him during events at the local high school.
“We were also told to watch him at the ballgames, and make sure that he didn’t, you know, hang around with the cheerleaders,” Gary said.
You would have to be a master communicator to talk someone out of this mess. Rogers couldn’t hack it.
“As we all know, campaigns make changes throughout the duration of the campaign,” campaign Chairman Bill Armistead said in a statement on Wednesday. “John made the decision to leave the campaign last Friday – any representations to the contrary are false – and we wish him well.”
Moore’s campaign is in tatters, but, amazingly, pollsters predict that he still has a chance. A lot of Alabama voters are stubbornly clinging to their support.
Brett Doster, a Moore campaign adviser, explained: “Unfortunately John just did not have the experience to deal with the press the last couple of weeks, and we’ve had to make a change.”
Rogers likely won’t be replaced, as the election is just a few weeks away. He will face off against Democrat Doug Jones on Dec. 12.
