The White House came down hard on Senate hopeful Roy Moore.
The Alabama judge is accused of a host vile sex crimes involving underage girls. One woman says that he touched her inappropriately when she was just 14 years old. Instead of hiding himself in shame, Moore is refusing to take himself out of the race.
“Like most Americans the president believes we cannot allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person’s life,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.
“However,” she continued, “the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”
It’s a bold statement. Judge Moore WILL do the right thing. Is the White House going to apply some pressure? It should. Having a pedophile run for office under the Republican banner could be ruinous.
“Moore, an anti-establishment conservative and former judge, and Democrat Doug Jones face off in a special Senate election December 12 to replace Jeff Sessions, who is now U.S. attorney general,” the Daily Mail reports.
Multiple women have come forward with complaints about Moore. These aren’t anonymous accusations. The women risked their own reputation by outing Moore. Their claims can’t be easily rejected.
However, Moore’s sole comment so far has been “I refuse to stand down.”
Republicans are already dealing with a mountain of issues; the party can’t survive any more scandals. If Moore cared about anything other than himself, he would step down and go into retirement.
Republican Rep. Peter King on Roy Moore to MSNBC: “It's so hideous. I would say, unless he can prove his innocence the burden is now on him, within the next day or so I believe he has to step down.”
