Vice President Mike Pence still believes in the president’s agenda. Congressmen have been bickering with each other for months over immigration, unable to pass a single bill. No one’s happy with the status quo yet no one’s willing to compromise either.
Pence isn’t fazed. He knows that President Trump has the right answer and eventually Congress will have to listen.
“President Trump made a commitment to the American people that we’re going to build a wall. That means we’re going to have a physical barrier on our southern border,” Pence told Fox News.
Senators left Washington last Thursday with the issue still resolved. They begged for an opportunity to devote a week to discussing immigration policy but were unable to accomplish anything when it was granted to them.
The Trump administration is focused on securing our borders and kicking criminal illegal immigrants out of the country. Nothing else matters. Democrats, conversely, want to throw open the country’s borders to anyone with a sob story and grant amnesty to the illegals already residing in the U.S.
Compromise is possible. Democrats are particularly keen to protect the Dreamers, a group of young illegals brought to America when they were still children. President Trump has indicated multiple times that he’s willing to shield the Dreamers if Democrats capitulate on the rest of his demands.
The latest round of discussion failed because liberals tried to take advantage of the president’s soft spot for Dreamers by redefining the term so that it applied to millions of people.
Sen. Chuck Grassley introduced a bill appropriated funds for the border wall while strengthening the legal protections already in place for the Dreamers. The measure should have passed, but Democrats are being belligerent.
“It’s unfortunate that so many of my colleagues, when given the chance to finally give citizenship to DACA kids, refused to do so,” Grassley said.
