Navy officials hastened to apologize Thursday after a pilot’s prank went viral. The unidentified soldier drew a large version of male genitalia in the air over Washington state.
It was a crude, childish act that mildly amused some residents and enraged others.
“The actions of this aircrew were wholly unacceptable and antithetical to Navy core values,” the Navy said in a statement. “The Navy apologizes for this irresponsible and immature act.”
One woman complained about having to explain the image to her young children. Others thought it was a joke.
“After it made the circles at the bottom, I knew what it was and started laughing,” one resident said. “It was pretty funny to see that. You don’t expect to see something like that.”
A woman described hearing about the incident from her son: “I thought it was pretty funny, and so did he… a lot of people have been talking about it.”
The guilty crew members have been grounded pending investigation. The prank may seem harmless, but a jet is an expensive piece of machinery to be messing around with. If the pilot wanted to have some fun in the air, he should have used a personal plane.
We might be at the edge of war. The military’s pilots need to be on high alert. Silly, juvenile pranks should be saved for their own time.
The Navy hasn’t identified the guilty pilot, nor have officials announced his punishment. They’re probably hoping that the story dies down soon.
