Vice President Mike Pence appeared in Sutherland Springs, Texas Wednesday to address the horrific First Baptist Church shooting. Rather than blaming gun control, Pence blames the attack on the Air Force’s incompetence.
The shooter, 26-year-old Devin Kelley, had a violent, disturbing history even before he sprayed a church congregation with bullets. While enlisted in the military, Kelley viciously attacked his wife and cracked the skull of a helpless infant.
He was court-martialed for his crimes and spent a year sitting in military prison.
And here’s where the Air Force messed up. The military is required to report such incidents to the FBI. If they had reported Kelley’s depravity, he would have been prohibited from buying a gun.
But they didn’t.
“We will find out why this information was not properly reported in 2012 and we are working with leaders in Congress to ensure this never happens again,” Pence said.
“He lied on his application. He had a history of mental illness, and there were bureaucratic failures.”
26 people are dead, nearly two dozen are injured, and an entire town has succumbed to grief because of a bureaucratic error. It’s sickening. Kelley looked into the eyes of little children and blew them away.
“Three days ago, evil descended on this small town… Faith is stronger than evil…No attack and no act of violence will ever diminish the strength of the American people,” Pence said.
The White House has mounted a strong response to the tragedy. Like Pence, President Trump doesn’t believe that gun control would have prevented the tragedy.
