Roy Moore’s doomed Senate campaign is still chugging along, despite the near constant barrage of calls for him to step down. Five separate women publicly accused the Alabama judge of sexually harassing them when they were teenagers.
Being outed as a pedophile usually marks the end of someone’s political career, but Moore is still refusing to admit that the stories are true. He appeared at Baptist church Tuesday and gave a rousing speech about his “innocence.”
“After 40-something years of fighting this battle, I’m now facing allegations. And that’s all the press want to talk about,” Moore said. “But I want to talk about the issues. I want to talk about where this country’s going and if we don’t get back to God, we’re not going anywhere.”
If Moore somehow manages to win, Republicans are going to have a tough decision. Should they kick him out of the Senate? Allowing a suspected pedophile to have a seat in Congress could be disastrous for the party.
It’s not clear what Moore’s chances are. Alabama voters may refuse to believe the stories.
“He is nothing but a Godly man trying to make this country come to its senses because of liberals and the other side of the fence trying to protect their evil ways,” voter Don Day said.
Shontelle Wright, meanwhile, said: “It is very terrible, but it would be bad for him to be innocent and them go after him.”
Moore’s career spans more than 40 years. He’s built up a lot of relationships in that time. Those bonds may be sturdy enough to save him.
