Megyn Kelly is TV poison.
Ratings for her own show are abysmal. She’s so toxic that other shows are now being affected. The fourth hour of the Today show is losing viewers daily. NBC wasted an astonishing amount of money securing Kelly’s “talents” for the network.
They built her a $10 million studio. They gave her a three-year, $69 million contract. They may as well have set the money on fire. Kelly’s somehow performing worse than people thought she would.
The superstar media personality is fizzling out.
“Our show is a baby. We’re six months old. Morning TV is obviously new to me and I’m figuring it out as we go…I think any show needs about a year to just find its footing,” Kelly said defensively when confronted with her poor ratings.
“I’m proud of the journalistic work we’ve been accomplishing. The ratings are important, there’s no question, but it’s not the only metric.”
Tamron Hall and Al Roker, the pair who Kelly replaced, were significantly more popular. Nearly 20% of the viewers from last season abandoned the third hour of the Today show after Kelly stepped into the hosting role.
“Tamron is an exceptional journalist, we valued and enjoyed her work at TODAY and MSNBC and hoped that she would decide to stay,” NBC News said in a statement after Hall left.
“We are disappointed that she has chosen to leave, but we wish her all the best.”
NBC’s gamble isn’t working out very well. Kelly’s abrasive style worked well on Fox News where she dealt with serious subjects. She’s failing to find a following for her morning show because the format doesn’t suit her. It’s too light and airy.
NBC is probably going to keep her around for awhile and hope for the best. They’ve thrown to much money at her to let her show die without fighting for it.
