Marco Rubio was once thought of as a shoe-in for representing the Republican Party in a presidential election. But ever since running and failing miserably, he’s kind of been operating in the shadows. That may be because of the ire he’s drawn from conservatives, who thought he would be a strong ally in Congress.
Even so, after spending the first year of Trump’s presidency in the shadows, Rubio’s back in the headlines after making some interesting comments about the ongoing Russia investigation.
As reported at the Hill, in a surprising return to the spotlight, Rubio made some surprising comments about the GOP’s agenda and the president. In an interview published on Friday, Rubio first claimed that maybe Republicans went too far in cutting the corporate tax rate, but he went even further in throwing his support being Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump administration.
“From his reputation and everything I know about him, I remain convinced that when this is all said and done, Mueller is going to only pursue things that are true and he will do it in a fair and balanced way,” Rubio said of Mueller in a News-Press interview.
If not for Trump’s comments on Thursday, Rubio would likely be in some mildly hot water. But President Trump, in an attempt to appear diplomatic and unworried, said Thursday that he has faith that Mueller will be fair and that he’s not anxious since there’s nothing to hide.
“I think the best thing that can happen for the president, for the country and for everyone is that he be allowed to complete his investigation as thoroughly and as completely as possible and that we allow the facts from the investigation to lead where they may,” Rubio continued.
Rubio sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its probe into the supposed ties between Russia and Trump. The senator’s previously said that firing Mueller would be a mistake on Trump’s part, adding that allowing him to complete the inquiry would be the best option.
Recently, Trump’s been highly critical of the investigation because of evidence emerging proving key elements of the FBI colluded against Trump and to get Hillary off the hook for her emails. The president’s criticism has to lead the left-wing media to pearl-clutch that he’s usurping democracy or something, which is completely unfounded.
Mueller’s investigation deserves to be criticized considering all we’ve learned about the origins of the Russia claims and initial launch of the inquiry. While it would be nice, as Rubio says, to let him complete it, the reality is that the investigation was launched based on extreme prejudice by elements that have tainted any hope for an unbiased resolution. So at this point, any hope of “fairness” has long gone out the window.
