The left’s war on statues is heating up just when I was starting to think that it might be over. In case you haven’t been paying attention, disgruntled liberals have made it their mission to tear down historical monuments that hurt their feelings.
The latest statues to be sacrificed to propriety are in Memphis. Nathan Bedford Forrest and Jefferson Davis are no longer being honored by the city.
“The statues no longer represent who we are as a modern, diverse city with momentum,” Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement.
“The Forrest statue was placed in 1904, as Jim Crow segregation laws were enacted. The Davis statue was placed in 1964, as the Civil Rights Movement changed our country.”
There’s no reason that statues can never be reconsidered. The problem isn’t that Memphis officials chose to tear down a few inanimate objects, the problem is WHY they did it.
Liberals are starting to expect the world to bend over backward to protect their feelings.
“It’s important to remember what I’ve said all along: I was committed to remove the statues in a lawful way,” Strickland added.
“From the beginning, we have followed state law — and tonight’s action is no different… This is an important moment in the life of our city… People from all walks of life came together to make today a reality.”
What’s next? A human being that’s offended by the presence of a statue is likely someone that’s easily stressed. What else should Memphis do to make sure that its residents aren’t annoyed when they move around the city?
