Back when Trump was initially filling out his cabinet, his pick for Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, was seen as an inspired choice. Both men expressed a strong desire to reign in illegal immigration and to root out corruption in the DC swamp.
While it seemed like a match made in Heaven, the relationship between Sessions and Trump has been on the rocks for much of the past year, with speculation constantly swirling that a replacement could be possible. As of late, however, there hasn’t been much friction, but the AG’s about to have to deal with a new set of problems brought about by his fellow Republicans.
As reported at the Daily Mail, Two Republican House members are called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign in a Washington Examiner op-ed Thursday, citing a lack of cooperation between the Justice Department and Congress, as well as leaks relating to its investigation into the Russia collusion ordeal.
Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Jim Jordan of Ohio voiced their displeasure with Sessions in the Thursday article, the headline reading: “It’s time for Jeff Sessions to go.”
They say it appears Sessions “has no control at all of the premier law enforcement agency in the world.” The pair have been very vocal in their criticism of the Justice Department and FBI recently, saying that they think bias has infected the agencies.
Jordan and Meadows base their call for Sessions’ head on reports that claim President Trump directed his White House counsel to tell Sessions to not recuse himself from the Justice Department’s investigation into the supposed ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.
The conversation between Don McGahn, the president’s White House counsel, and Sessions apparently occurred at Trump’s behest right before Sessions announced he would recuse himself from the inquiry. It seems that the president had McGahn try and convince Sessions not to step aside, which is now being seen as some kind of proof he wanted to be able to manipulate the investigation via Sessions.
At the end of the day, this issue sounds worse than it is. Meadows and Jordan’s pearl-clutching article will play right into the hands of the Left, who will no doubt agree and play up the fact that fellow Republicans are the ones leading the witch hunt. Asking Sessions to remain on an investigation is hardly evidence of guilt on behalf of the president, but it’s sure to be presented as such in the days and weeks ahead.
