Katie Couric admitted Matt Lauer was a sexual abuser five years ago. In a flyby comment on a gameshow, Couric complained about Lauer’s proclivities.
“He pinches me on the a** a lot,” Couric said laughingly.
“Wow, I wouldn’t have a problem with that,” the game show host quipped in response.
The seemingly flippant comment has now come back to haunt Lauer. His abrupt dismissal from NBC caused shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry.
“It happened during an appearance on the Bravo interview show Watch What Happens Live. Host Andy Cohen often subjects his visitors to a game of ‘Plead the Fifth,’ which involves answering three questions,” the Daily Mail writes.
“Players are allowed to ‘Plead the Fifth’ in order to get out of answering one of the questions, but must answer at least two.”
For Couric’s final question, host Cohen asked her to name the most annoying thing about Lauer.
The accuser who brought down Lauer’s career is still unknown, as are the specific allegations that she made. Whatever she said, however, was enough to immediately tank Lauer’s reputation. In less than 24 hours he went from holding a job that paid $25 million a year to being publicly fired.
A revolution is occurring in the entertainment industry. It’s hard to believe that Couric’s comment was originally brushed off so easily. Sexual harassment in the workplace is finally being taken seriously.
Couric and Lauer formed a legendary partnership. Her renown equals his own. It’s disturbing to imagine what might have been going on behind the scenes while their partnership was formed.
