The Alabama Senate race to fill the seat left vacant due to Jeff Sessions’ appointment to the Justice Department is being decided today. Republican candidate Roy Moore was plagued with allegations of sexual misconduct over the past month, throwing into question his candidacy, but despite calls to drop out, he’s still seeing the race through to the end.
While we won’t know for sure who the victor is until later this evening, there’s already some interesting drama unfolding involving the former holder of the contested seat.
As reported at the Daily Mail, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has refused to definitively answer who he voted for in the Alabama election.
“I voted absentee,” Sessions told reporters in Baltimore, where he attended an event to promote the battle against the MS-13 gang’s spread throughout the US.
“I value the sanctity of the ballot. The people of Alabama are good and decent, they’ll make the right decision,” said Sessions.
Sessions has been very quiet concerning the election, even though it’s his seat up for grabs. With as much controversy already surrounding him, it’s been wise for him to stay out of the scandal altogether, as nothing good could come from it.
While Sessions has abstained from involvement, President Trump has been loudly proclaiming his support for Moore. Earlier Tuesday, he sent out a series of tweets, informing people of the stakes involved should a Democrat take what’s normally a solid Republican Senate seat. “The people of Alabama will do the right thing,’ Trump tweeted, trying to stop Democrat Doug Moore from overtaking Republican Roy Moore.”
“Doug Jones is Pro-Abortion, weak on Crime, Military and Illegal Immigration, Bad for Gun Owners and Veterans and against the WALL. Jones is a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet. Roy Moore will always vote with us. VOTE ROY MOORE!‘ Trump added.
Despite the mass abandonment of Moore by the GOP, Trump has remained by his side, even sending out a robocall at the last minute, imploring Alabamians to vote for Moore if they want to see his “Make American Great Again!” agenda actually get implemented.
The race has huge ramifications no matter who wins. But should Moore come out on top, the controversy will only continue to grow as the GOP will be forced to decide whether or not to kick him out of Congress.
