An undocumented immigrant accused of slaughtering her husband and four young children grinned maniacally at news cameras during her first court appearance. The outlandish, off-putting behavior was criticized by the judge.
Last week, Maria Isabel Garduno-Martinez, 33, repeatedly stabbed her family to death while they slept. The horrific incident disturbed the small Atlanta suburb where the family had resided. Yet, the only thing that’s remarkable about Martinez’s crime is the scope of it. Migrants, due to their uncertain status in society, often engage in illegal activities but few resort to such brutality.
“Four children — Isabela Martinez, 10; Dacota Romero, 7; Dillan Romero, 4; and Axel Romero, 2 — and their father, Martin Romero, 33, were found dead in the home. A fifth child, identified by family members as 9-year-old Diana, survived the stabbing with serious injuries,” Fox News reports.
Four beautiful children had their future’s stolen. A little girl was physically maimed, perhaps left with PTSD. Illegal immigration’s destructive power has overwhelmed thousands of families. Martinez likely suffers from mental ailments, yet even if she was destined to be a murderer she should never have had the opportunity to commit her crimes in the U.S.
Crime begets crime. Someone who’s willing to defy our most sacred laws and become an illegal is not someone that we can trust.
“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand,” Gwinnett County police said in a statement. “This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighborhood, and community.”
At the hearing, Martinez flailed her arms in the arm while slowly rocking back and forth. Her attention-seeking antics, however, were rebuked.
“Ma’am I’m going to ask you to cut out the displays for the camera. It’s probably not good or to your benefit,” the judge said.
