The heart of every illegal immigrant in America leaped for joy last week after the acquittal of veteran border jumper Jose Ines Garcia Zarate. The man responsible for the death of Kate Steinle evaded justice.
People are so outraged about the verdict that the federal government wasted no time in swooping in. Zarate now faces federal charges.
“A federal grand jury indicted Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate today for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and for being an illegally present alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition,” reads a statement released by the Justice Department.
No one will ever be convicted as Steinle’s killer, but at least the perpetrator is facing consequences.
In 2015 Steinle, 32, was strolling around a San Francisco neighborhood with her father when she was shot in the back by Zarate. The illegal had found a gun hidden on the pier, and he claims that it went off accidentally when he picked it up.
“The new charges follow a move Friday by the Department of Justice, which unsealed an amended arrest warrant for Zarate, which included violations related to the charges of a felon in possession of a firearm, involuntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon, all of which were filed after the defendant’s initial arrest,” Fox News writes.
Zarate should never have been in the U.S. in the first place. Before he shot Steinle, he’d been deported five separate times. San Francisco authorities had the chance to deport him again and instead decided to shield him.
