If you were looking for a reason to skip the salad with dinner tonight you’re about to get a really good one. Fresh Express, one company that produces and distributes packaged salads across the country to stores including Walmart, recalled a salad mix on Saturday after two people in Florida got a nasty surprise.
A statement from the CDC said that they are “assisting investigation of animal material found in packaged salad.” The “animal material” that they’re speaking of refers to a bat that was found inside one of their salad packages.

People reportedly found the bat in a “deteriorated condition” after eating some of leafy greens from the Organic Marketside Spring Mix package, purchased at a Walmart, according to the CDC.
The bat was taken to the CDC rabies lab, but investigators could not rule out if the animal had the disease because its remains were so decayed. The two customers are being evaluated by Florida local and state health officials.
Children across the nation can no doubt rejoice that their parents may be shying away from the pre-packaged salads for now.
Express Fresh released this statement in response to the incident:
“Fresh Express takes matters of food safety very seriously and rigorously complies with all food safety regulations including the proscribed Good Agricultural Practices.”
