Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz is due to inherit a six-figure estate. The woman who watched over Cruz for a few months when his mother died is eager to get her hands on the money- she filed for control of the estate just one day after the massacre.
Rocxanne Deschamps petitioned the court to be named the administrator of Lynda Cruz’s $800,000 estate last Thursday.
Her haste seems tactless to some. “This woman is a piece of work,” reads an online comment about Deschamps.
Her claim isn’t entirely baseless. Cruz’s younger brother Zachary, due to turn 18 within a few days, still lives with her.
Deschamps had Zachary involuntarily committed last Friday.
Deschamps’ supporters claim that she’s not trying gain control of the money for her money benefit.
“She’s got parents of kids coming after her, threatening her to the point where she’s got to have police escorts sitting outside her house,” a friend of Deschamps said.
“She’s getting threats from parents of kids who were in the shooting. Don’t get me wrong, what Nikolas did was absolutely wrong and what he gets, his punishment is his punishment… I don’t condone that and that was wrong. But she’s trying to help these kids out.”
Cruz murdered 17 people and injured 15 more when he assaulted his former high school last Wednesday. He peppered innocent students and teachers with bullets in what was one of the worst mass shootings on American soil.
Cruz and Deschamps lived together for less than three months. She allegedly kicked him out because he refused to get rid of his AR-15, the rifle he used during the shooting.
“He wanted to have a gun and she did not want it in the house so she gave him the ultimatum that if you want to keep the gun, you cannot live here,” Deschamps’ friend said.
“He chose to keep the gun and that was his decision. So the stuff about she kicked him out – no, she gave him the choice. And being 19 and an adult, the choice he made was he wanted to go.”
It’s unlikely that Cruz will ever touch a penny of his mother’s estate. He’s almost certainly going to have to pay restitution to his victims.
