Liberals politicians should be worried, their lawlessness will no longer go unpunished. After President Trump was elected a swath of Democratic cities and districts across the country declared themselves to be “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants.
On Tuesday, a U.S. appeals court panel upheld an anti-sanctuary city law that punished officials who interfere with federal immigration officers. The Texas law will remain in place as politicians continue the fight in a lower court.
The controversial law, known as Senate Bill 4, requires law enforcement officials who defy federal immigration orders to be thrown in jail. It also orders police officers to inquire about immigration status during routine traffic stops.
Texas politicians love the law. They don’t want the state to be overrun with sanctuary districts. Like California, Texas hosts a large illegal immigrant population. Unlike California, however, Texas authorities are willing to cooperate with ICE agents.
Critics of the law claim that it will be used to promote racial profiling.
The attack on sanctuary policies is coming from multiple directions. President Trump’s Justice Department sued California last week, alleging that the state’s efforts to impede ICE investigations were illegal. The department is expected to win its suit.
“Enforcing immigration law prevents the release of individuals from custody who have been charged with serious crimes,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said after the court decision was allowed.
The Trump administration is cracking down hard on illegal immigration. He’s even floated the idea of cutting off federal funding to sanctuary cities.
“We are exploring all legal options going forward,” Lee Gelernt, an attorney for the plaintiffs and the deputy director of the ACLU´s Immigrants´ Rights Project and a lead attorney for the plaintiffs, said.
Sanctuary policies are going extinct. President Trump plans to use the Justice Department to bat down pro-illegal immigration laws across the country.
