While the rest of the country focuses on the NFL, Attorney General Jeff Sessions is stepping up with a reminder of what really matters. America’s values are under attack, and the problem is far more insidious than the drama playing out on the football field.
Sessions plans to give a speech Tuesday condemning recent liberal attacks on free speech. Millennials like to label dissenting opinions as “hate speech.”
“Freedom of thought and speech on the American campus are under attack,” Sessions plans to say.
“Whereas the American University was once the center of academic freedom — a place of robust debate, a forum for the competition of ideas — it is transforming into an echo chamber of political correctness and homogenous thought, a shelter for fragile egos.”
American universities have long tilted to the left, but the climate is becoming insufferable. Fringe radicals have taken over academia, to the exclusion of more nuanced thinkers. Conservatives on campus are treated like lepers.
According to Sessions: “This has allowed a cottage industry of protestors to crop up who understand school administrators will capitulate to their demands and are now routinely shutting down speeches and debates… The right of free speech does not exist to protect the speech we all want to agree on. It exists to protect the very speech that we don’t want to hear.”
