Dennis Rodman might save America.
Well, not really. But his bizarre, controversial relationship with North Korea dictator Kim Jong Un might improve relations between Pyongyang and Washington. Rodman is one of the few Westerners on Earth who has a personal relationship with Kim.
“When I went over there, the first thing he said to me was, ‘Mr. Rodman, we just want to know, can we trust you?’ I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And that’s how our conversation started,” Rodman told Stephen Colbert.
“He’s more like a kid than anything.”
Most people would describe Kim as a maniacal despot, or as Colbert quipped: “He’s a kid, but he’s a kid with nuclear weapons.”
Rodman, however, describes Kim like he’s a rowdy, spoiled celebrity.
“I don’t really judge people, you know, by their color. I don’t judge where they come from. I just judge people where, you know, we’re all human beings. You know, throughout the day, we’re all human beings. It’s funny though that I don’t see how people can sit there and say that this person is a ‘madman.’ He probably is, but I didn’t see that. But he probably is,” said Rodman.
Rodman’s insipid version of diplomacy might not be very effective, but he doesn’t seem to be making things worse either.
“For me to go over there and see him as much as I have, I basically hang out with him all the time, we laugh, we sing karaoke, we do a lot of cool things together… We ride horses, we hang out, we go skiing, we hardly ever talk politics and that’s the good thing about that,” Rodman explained.
