We’re only a year into Trump’s presidency, but it’s never too early to start talking about the next election cycle. At the moment, it looks like the Democrats will finally be entering the post-Hillary Clinton era, which means they’re going to have to find a big name quick to face off against Trump, seeing how their bench is embarrassingly thin.
While there are some typical options for the Left, ever since Trump’s shocking success, there’s been talk of running their own celebrity candidate, with names like Tom Hanks and Oprah being thrown around. When it comes to the latter, it appears it’s not just wishful thinking and speculation, as folks close to the legendary television host have claimed it’s a real possibility.
As reported at the New York Post, two of Oprah’s close friends have said that she’s “actively thinking” about a run for the presidency in 2020. The news comes in the wake of Oprah’s well-received Golden Globes victory speech Sunday night, which is the talk of the web Monday.
Apparently, several of Oprah’s confidants have been pushing her to run for months, but it seems she has yet to make a decision on the matter. While there’s still plenty of time, the sooner she decides, the better, as Democratic hopefuls are already positioning themselves for the Iowa caucuses.
The Democratic race for president won’t officially begin until after the 2018 midterms, but many potential candidates are already jostling for position and making trips to Iowa.
After the speech, Winfrey’s longtime partner Stedman Graham was quoted saying a run is certainly a possibility. “It’s up to the people,” Graham told a Los Angeles Times reporter. “She would absolutely do it.”
The Washington Post quoted actress Meryl Streep saying that Winfrey “launched a rocket” with the speech.
“I want her to run for president,” Streep told The Post. “I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn’t have a choice.”
Oprah is probably the best celebrity option for the Left, as she fits all the criteria they’ve been going for, minus the experience. But with Trump being successful having never been involved in government, the whole “experience” requirement isn’t as big a deal as it used to be. So maybe Oprah is the answer to the Democratic Party’s candidate problem. We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of moves she makes ahead of the midterms.
