America’s dwindling interest in the NFL isn’t entirely attributable to their ridiculous protest. Fans are being turned off by the players’ babyish antics. Miami Dolphins running back Kenyan Drake threw a hissy fit Sunday after he was ejected from the last game of the season. He burst into noisy tears, not bothering to move off of the field before he became choked with sobs.
The Dolphins, who were destroyed in Sunday’s matchup, handled their loss with about as much grace as a rambunctious 12-year-old. Drake wasn’t the only player ejected from the game. Star wide receiver Jarvis Landry was punished for headbutting another player.
First, let’s look at Drake’s temper tantrum: “Drake emerged from the bottom of a massive player pile-up where defensive end Ryan Davis appeared to choke him while tackle Adolphous Washington refused to let the running back go free from his grip. An enraged Drake then assumed the form of a champion discus thrower and launched a helmet belonging to a member of the Buffalo Bills over 20 years down the field.”
Then he started to cry. Whatever Drake wanted to accomplish, it probably didn’t help his goal to be seen crying like a baby on national TV. Couldn’t he wait until he got to the locker room?
“Whoever’s helmet it was, I grabbed it and in the heat of the moment, I was like, ‘Well, if I’m going to go out, I guess this is how I’m going to go out,’” Drake said Monday.
“It was definitely stupid on my part. We still had a chance to win the game. I let the situation get the best of me. Who knows where the helmet could have landed. I put people at risk.”
He didn’t mention the crying.
Landry, meanwhile, was kicked out of the game for “a personal foul after he hit Bills safety Jordan Poyer and headbutted him following a one-yard touchdown reception.”
His defense was more spirited than Drake’s.
“The whistle was already blown, I already scored the touchdown. Like I said, I was just defending myself and protecting myself and they threw the flag on me… I regret I put my teammates in a bad spot and I put myself in a bad spot. But, again, I do have a career to protect,” Landry said defiantly.
“If somebody tries to jeopardize that I have the right to defend myself too.”
