Good riddance. The California teacher who slammed the military in a vile rant recorded by one of his students was finally fired Tuesday.
It’s about time. California classrooms naturally lean left but fired El Rancho High School history teacher Gregory Salcido went too far. The school district agreed unanimously to can him.
“His comments do not reflect what we stand for, who we are… the classroom should never be a place where students feel that they are picked at, bullied, intimidated,” Board of Education President Aurora Villon said.
Salcido, who is also a Pico Rivera city councilman, rocketed to notoriety January after raved against the military in his classroom.
“Think about the people who you know who are over there. Your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever. They’re dumbs‑‑ts,” Salcido sneered.
“They’re not like high-level thinkers, they’re not academic people, they’re not intellectual people. They’re the lowest of our low.”
Even Salcido’s “apology” was offensive.
“I don’t think it’s all a revelation to anybody that those who aren’t stellar students usually find the military a better option. … That’s not a criticism of anybody. Anything I said had nothing to do with their moral character,” he said.
The First Amendment protects your right to say whatever you want. Salcido, however, was a teacher. His opinion would have still been offensive if he’d said it in a bar, but it would have been far less inappropriate.
“Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but at the same time they shouldn’t be disrespecting the veterans who have fought for our rights, who give up their lives and do stuff that other people are not willing to do,” the student who recorded the tirade told Fox News.
People were outraged after Salcido’s words went viral.
Unsuspecting parents sent their children to be educated and instead, Salcido tried to fill their heads with lies about the military. Salcido could have addressed problems within the armed forces without attacking the men and women who serve.
