The NFL’s plunging ratings should have been enough to convince players that their protest was failing. No one wants to watch a whiny, overpaid man pouting on the football field.
Common sense, however, isn’t what the average NFL player is known for. A few of them are keeping up the resistance, and NBC is committed to letting it play out. Executives admitted that they were perfectly willing to air the protest on TV.
“When you are covering a live event, you are covering what’s happening,” NBC Sports EP Fred Gaudelli told reporters. “If there are players who choose to kneel, they will be shown live.”
Colin Kaepernick’s temper tantrum/political movement is working out surprisingly well for him. He’s still not playing ball, but he’s being hailed as a hero. He has much more social clout now. He’s an A-lister, one of entertainment’s elite.
If the purpose of the protest was to inject new life into Kaepernick’s career, it’s worked admirably.
Fox News writes: “The anthem will be aired live and is scheduled to be performed by Pink. Potential protesters will have an opportunity to make a statement in front of a massive audience, as 112.2 million people watched Super Bowl LI last season – the fifth most-watched program in television history.”
Fortunately for football fans, interest in the protest is dwindling. Over 200 players and coaches were refusing to stand for the anthem at one point. It grew so bad that President Trump himself called for players to have a little more class.
Only 19 players participated in the season’s final week.
