The Obamas are in the midst of inking a juicy deal with Netflix. Negotiations for a multi-show deal are ongoing. The former president and his wife plan to produce, and perhaps star in, a series of “inspirational” programs.
Netflix now dominates the entertainment industry. Traditional Hollywood producers are still raking in huge profits, but the online streaming giant is steadily eating away at their bottom lines.
The “production partnership” between the Obamas and Netflix is a big deal. Netflix stock shot up a couple of points Friday after the impending deal was announced. Democrats can’t get enough of the Obamas, eight years with Barack in the White House wasn’t enough. They still want to hear more.
“President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire,” Eric Schultz, a senior Obama advisor, said Thursday. “Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”
He said that the Obamas wouldn’t use their platform to attack President Trump or conservative values, but they obviously intend to try to spread their brand of social liberalism.
Netflix has 117 million subscribers, a massive captive audience for the Obamas to influence. When announcing the budding partnership, the New York Times hinted that the upcoming programs might be a liberal answer to sites like Breitbart and the Daily Caller.
President Trump was an entertainer first and then became president. Barack Obama is doing the opposite.
“Mr. Obama could moderate conversations on topics that dominated his presidency… Another show could feature Mrs. Obama on topics, like nutrition, that she championed in the White House,” the Times wrote.
It’s not clear when the shows would be released.
