Rockstar legend Alice Cooper credits his relationship with God for his sanity. Nearly four decades ago the 70-year-old musician had a bout of alcoholism. Religion saved his life.
“Everything that could go wrong was shutting down inside of me… I was drinking with Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix and trying to keep up with Keith Moon and they all died at 27,” Cooper said.
He nearly succumbed to the disease. Doctors warned him that his life was at risk if he kept drinking. Hearing those words was the push he needed. He gave up alcohol and focused on the church.
“There’s nothing in Christianity that says I can’t be a rock star,” Cooper said.
“People have a very warped view of Christianity. They think it’s all very precise and we never do wrong and we’re praying all day and we’re right-wing. It has nothing to do with that. It has to do with a one-on-one relationship with Jesus Christ.”
The rockstar lifestyle is notoriously wild. Cooper explained, however, he reads the bible every day and attends church weekly. He’s been married since the 1970’s and never once been unfaithful.
Believing in God stopped being cool a long time ago. Most Hollywood stars proudly boast of their wild exploits. Cooper is unusual. He wears his faith openly like a badge.
“My wife and I are both Christian,” Cooper said. “My father was a pastor, my grandfather was an evangelist. I grew up in the church, went as far away as I could from it — almost died — and then came back to the church.”
Cooper rose to fame in the 70’s. His career should get another jolt of energy this weekend when he stars in a live version of Jesus Christ Superstar. The show airs Sunday on NBC.
