Welp, the NFL can’t seem to make it a day without courting controversy, whether it be from the ongoing anthem protests or getting skewered by President Trump over it.
But the latest misstep by the league is a little different, as it came at the hands of one of their most celebrated broadcasters, who apparently went too far with a joke during Sunday Night Football this week.
As reported at the Daily Mail, veteran play-by-play man Al Michaels has been forced to apologize after he cracked a joke about Harvey Weinstein during the broadcast.
Michaels was talking about the New York Giants’ terrible start to the season when he made a dangerous reference during the fourth quarter.
“I mean, let’s face it. The Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein and they’re up 14 points,” he said while Cris Collinsworth laughed awkwardly.
“Only my LA guy comes up with that one,” Collinsworth said, trying to brush the remark aside. “There you go.”
“All you have to do is read the papers — any paper,” Michaels responded.
In the walk-on-eggshells, politically correct world we live in, it’s no surprise that snowflake liberals took to Twitter and elsewhere to cry about how awful and insensitive his joke was.
Lisa Guerrero, an investigative “journalist,” wrote: “Must be funny UNLESS YOU HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN A VICTIM OF ASSAULT.” Boo hoo.
Sean Pendergast, a sports writer from Houston, added: “Checking to see if Al Michaels is 70 years old yet, the age of immunity where you can say anything with no reprisals.”
Meanwhile, Colleen Wolfe, an NFL host and reporter in Los Angeles, said: “I didn’t just hear Al Michaels say the Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein. Did that really just happen?” All this hand-wringing and faux outrage is disgusting. It was an innocuous little joke, yet he’s been forced to apologize for it.
Michaels later issued an apology, saying: “Sorry I made a reference earlier before, I tried to be a little flip about somebody obviously very much in the news all over the country. It was not meant in that manner. So, my apologies. And we’ll just leave it at that.”
How tiresome these people’s lives must be, getting upset over the littlest things every day. Also, how mentally weak they are to be affected by his comments and to act like he’s seriously making light of what Weinstein’s victims suffered. These are the people that suck the life and fun out of any gathering of people because they’re just waiting to get offended and whine about it. It’s just another example of political correctness gone mad.
