Universal healthcare has a new champion. Emmy award-winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus made an impassioned plea on Twitter Thursday, first announcing that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer before demanding that Americans fight for better access to care.
Breast cancer affects millions of people. Sufferer’s lives are often turned inside out. Most people, however, don’t have to discuss their diagnosis with all of America. Dreyfus is incredibly brave for being so candid.

Although misguided, her call for universal healthcare is also a mark of her courage. As the comedian noted on Twitter, she’s among the lucky one percent that has access to amazing insurance. She has the comfort of knowing that she’ll be able to afford the best care possible.
That’s not the reality for most people diagnosed with breast cancer. Obamacare’s failures have left us with a broken system. People are desperate for change, so it’s not surprising they’re latching onto socialist ideas. The Republicans inability to pass their own healthcare bill has made people suspect that their plan is as bad as Obama’s.
Dreyfus should be admired for calling attention to the issue.
“Our love and support go out to Julia and her family at this time,” HBO said in a statement. “We have every confidence she will get through this with her usual tenacity and undaunted spirit, and look forward to her return to health and to HBO for the final season of Veep.”
